How to turn a photo into a coloring page

Step-by-step: pick the right photo, convert it to clean line art for free, and print it at the perfect size.

Step 1: Start with the right photo

The best coloring pages come from photos with strong contrast and good lighting. A close-up of a face, a pet, or a single object works better than a busy scene. Make sure your subject fills the frame — details smaller than a coin usually disappear in the line art.

Good: portraits, pets, houses, flowers, toys
Hard: landscapes with lots of texture, low-light shots, group photos from far away

Step 2: Convert your photo (free, in seconds)

Step 3: Download PNG or PDF

Step 4: Print at 100%

In your printer dialog, set the scale to 100% (Actual size) — not "Fit to page". Fit-to-page shrinks the image and changes the line weight. Choose the paper size that matches your download, and use slightly heavier paper (120–160 gsm) if you plan to color with markers.

Print tip

If lines look faint, set print quality to "High" or "Best". If the page comes out with a white border you don't want, that's your printer's non-printable area — not the file.

What if the result doesn't look good?
